Brown sugar frosting pairs well with so many flavors of cake like chocolate, vanilla, pumpkin, and spiced cakes, adding a rich, caramel-like sweetness to each.
As always, you can use butter, Crisco, or a combination of each. If you will be serving the cake outside in the heat, the Crisco version will hold up better but it is strictly a personal preference.
FROSTING INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter (or 1 cup crisco) or (1/2 crisco and 1/2 butter combo)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 to 4 tbsp of milk or milk substitute
FROSTING DIRECTIONS
- In a mixer, cream together the butter (or Crisco) and brown sugar.
- Add vanilla and mix until it is combined.
- Add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time on low speed until combined. Increase speed and mix until desired consistency. (Add more milk if too thick or more powdered sugar if too thin)
